Environment office
The environment office seeks to manage environmental resources in support of the development of the municipality. It carries out the following actions:
- Air quality studies (assessment of the atmospheric air quality in the municipality); Zierbena Municipal Council is engaged in a study of local air of quality in co-operation with the Faculty of Chemistry at the San Sebastián campus of the University of the Basque Country. A monitoring station has been set up in the port of Zierbena to take samples for subsequent analysis.
- Efective development of Local Agenda 21 schemes.
- Certification of the La Arena Beach as compliant with UNE-EN ISO 14001:1996 and UNE -EN ISO_ 9001:2000.
- Environmental awareness and education actions:
- Recycling workshops.
- Environmentally focused excursions into the surrounding countryside.
- Selective refuse collection (selective collection of cooking oil):
Disposing of cooking oil by pouring it down the sink blocks up pipes, provides food for rats and may even damage maritime flora if the oil reaches the sea. To prevent this, used oil can be recycled for use as low-pollution vehicle fuel, which is beneficial to the environment.
The company Rafrinor has been awarded the contract to collect oil in the municipality. Collection takes place on the first Monday of each month in each district.
